The Challenge Foundation was created in 1988 by John Bryan to advance education by providing grants for model charter schools through a family-operated charitable trust. The guiding mission was to help every American child attain an education that allows them to excel, building a better life for students, families, and communities.
The Challenge Foundation began as a charitable trust in 1988, born out of one man’s passion for education. That man was John Bryan, who began life as a country boy from Livingston, Montana. Though he ultimately earned a master’s degree in chemical engineering and substantial accomplishments, John attributed his success to his classical K–12 education in the schools along the Yellowstone River in Montana. School was also where he would meet his wife, Martha, his lifelong sweetheart and partner.

Today, our mission continues, yet efforts have expanded well beyond providing grants. We support charter schools through three integrated initiatives:
From planning and site selection through building or renovation, including financing, negotiating, and purchasing, Challenge Foundation Properties partners with charter schools to leverage strengths and provide the support that leads to long-term success. Our services can begin at the dream stage or well into the effort.
Our education professionals provide ongoing support for our academies, including training for teachers, administration, and boards; marketing assistance; networking, and policy support.
Our ongoing relationships and commitment to education add up to support innovative learning options. Through Challenge Foundation Choice efforts, we work collectively with educators to rally support for policy efforts and initiatives that advance learning.
